Meaning & Properties

Yellow Topaz is a clear and light-yellow colored gemstone. It is one of the hardest gemstones with a hardness of 8.0 on the Mohs scale of hardness. Topaz is a silicate of aluminum with the presence of fluorine as well. It is transparent and it reflects light like diamonds. Yellow Topaz has biaxial optical properties. Topaz has a vitreous luster and may have white streaks in it.

It belongs to the orthorhombic crystal system with a prismatic crystal habit. It is formed beneath Earth of mineral crystallization of a cooling process of volcanic fluid. Fluorine vapors are solidified before the formation of Quartz and this leads to the formation of Topaz under high pressure & high temperature.
